During the 60’s when the world was wonderstruck by the Beatles, the band suddenly decided to leave everything and learn transcendental meditation at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Ashram in Rishikesh, India. They first met Maharshi Ji in London and later attended his sessions in Wales. It was their attraction towards meditation and Maharshi Ji’s teachings that led Maharshi Ji to invite them to his Ashram. Thus in 1968, the small laid-back town of Rishikesh got the entire worlds attention. This not only made the world change their views about Indian spirituality but also led to Rishikesh later developing as the Yoga-capital of the world.
During their stay at the Ashram, the band wrote many songs for projects such as”Abbey Road” and “White Album”.
Rishikesh has always been close to my heart. Being just 45 Kms away, I often visit this place to get my life at ease and Beatles Ashram is always a ‘must visit’ spot on my list.
The Ashram was abandoned in 1997 but later opened for general visitors who wish to explore the area.It is located in a beautiful spot within the Rajaji National Park with river Ganga flowing quietly behind. When one starts walking from Ram Jhula towards the entry gate, it is not difficult to notice how fast the hustle and bustle of the city start getting slower, until one runs into the forest area of the national park.

The entire area is an explorer’s paradise. Over the time, the ashram has become a canvas for many graffiti artists. Every building is painted with love messages for the Beatles, their songs, and many other spiritual works. The entire ashram has an aura of excellent history, that makes you think about the time when this place was functional.
There are many lecture halls but I have noticed only two, others may exist but it is hard to understand as many buildings are run down. One lecture hall on the left-hand side just after few minutes walk from Ashram entrance is very interesting. As this lecture hall popular as “The Beatles Cathedral Gallery” and this hall is full of graffiti.
