Many consider Dodital in Uttarakhand to be a stepping stone to the more difficult and lengthy treks in the Himalayas.

Gujjar hutment at Manjhi-Dodital

It is a moderate trek that winds its way through forests of pine, cedar, oak, rhododendron and spruce on way to a crystal clear lake at 9921 feet above sea level teeming with trout, thanks to a British gentleman who introduced the hatchlings here in 1890. Do get the permission for angling from the forest department at Uttarkashi or the forest checkpost at Bhebra if you want to catch fish.

PLEASE NOTE: ANGLING (sport fishing) IS ALLOWED, NOT FISHING (commercial fishing). Put simply, you have to RELEASE the fish back in the water after catching it.

About 5 km short of the lake comes the small hutment of Manjhi. It is not a village, but a simple transit camp the shepherds use in the summer months during their migration to the higher pastures with the livestock.

This picture was taken in March during a spell of unseasonal snowfall that had made Dodital off limits.
